For the evaluation, Info-Chalon spoke with Bénédicte Mosnier of Éditions Éveil et Découvertes, co-organizer of this show that gathered 3,800 visitors!

The sixth edition of the Young Book Fair took place from 10 to 12 June at the Parc des Expositions in Chalon-sur-Saône. The event, co-organised by the Commission for Exhibitions and Exhibitions, Éditions Éveil et Découvertes and the city of Chalon-sur-Saône has been a real success with a steady number of entries – compared to the 2019 edition, before Covid – while the majority of salons, performance halls, theaters, etc. are seeing a drop in attendance. , sometimes up to -30%. So what makes this show so successful?

Benedict, how was the number of entries distributed in the 2022 edition?

Friday was exclusively for school children. So 1,600 students were welcomed on this first day, an additional 300, which is an additional 10 semesters. This year we also gave them 3 shows including Le Cid, part of the college program, which was reconsidered by Cie Par Monts et Merveilles. The schools of Chalon-sur-Saône and Grand Chalon are very demanding, we must continue our work regarding the transfer of external schools to better enable them to come and join the fair. Schools took ownership of the show. 2022 is the year of reading. We have understood all the importance and necessity of communicating with writers, whether through stories, nursery rhymes, or through the touch of a book but also through illustrations … All this helps to develop an imagination that allows you to create your own story. The magic of reading and words allows an open mind and escape. It also provides freedom through imagination … The intimacy of a person is incorporated into the text, which gives it continuity, transforms it, and allows a new story to be written. I especially like this little sentence: “A child who reads will be an adult who thinks.”

We also gave a lot of 4 workshops and exhibitions, it was a very team work done and Éveil et Découvertes brought his knowledge as a publisher. Let’s not forget that this is a publisher fair and we want to preserve this DNA. We are present at this exhibition to show what the publisher does and this allows homes to meet their audience.

Saturday and Sunday were “public” days, 2,200 people came, evenly distributed over the two days. If we compare 2019, it will be the same number of entries. Since its inception, attendance has continued to increase but after a fairly special two years due to Covid, we are fortunate though to find an attendance rate similar to 2019 which is a great opportunity when we find attendance has gone down all over. Chalon-sur-Saône has managed to maintain the number of its entries by introducing a slightly different formula, with new features. As a reminder, 40 publishers were present at this sixth edition, including 14 houses located in Bourgogne-Franch-Comte, 2 of Belgium. We also welcomed 48 authors and illustrators.

Initially organized in the Salons of the Colosseum, this version is the second to be held in the Parc des Expositions. Why this change, is the most suitable place?

In fact, this is the second year that the salon has moved to the Parc des Expositions. Last year, to maintain the view, we had to find a place that provided wider aisles, among other things, to comply with the sanitary restrictions put in place. True, the Colosseum did not allow this, so we ended up in the Parc des Expositions. For our greater happiness in the end, the available space allows for better circulation in the lanes but also allows us to better manage different audiences (young children, middle and high school students).

This large space also allowed us to present exhibitions, a relaxation and reading area run by the libraries, including the Chalon-sur-Saône library, which shares a lot with us, but also an area of 200 square meters with islands, called ‘Baby’s Space to the Little Reader’, led by a service Early Childhood at the Grand Chalon and La Pomme Verte. Several spaces hosting workshops were also set up at the heart of this gallery, as was the space for the Prix des Familles with its bookcase. Those who won this award got a button to put it on the cover of their book like no other award. All this to say that this show is being held nationally – and that it has its place in the national decor. We are also fortunate to have Canopé on our back-to-back editions, these groupings outside of circle and area. The Parc des Expositions is quite the place, attracting exhibitors as well as the public. Gives a national dimension to the youth book fair.

What is the general atmosphere of this show?

Discover and share reading. It is a date that the general public, young and old, has been waiting for. The general atmosphere included recreational, educational and cultural activities. Parc des Expositions is a place that brings audiences from all walks of life together. We all come for the book. Moreover, it is a children’s book fair, and should be synonymous with joy and delight.

What has been so successful?

It all depends on the age groups. Autograph authors and illustrators are always in great demand, and visitors love to meet them at discussion time. The shows have also attracted a lot, as they are a link between the book and the child, the child and the parent. These are the keys to a cultural communication that targets everyone, it’s a show where the intergenerational bond is also strong. The exhibits were very beautiful, it challenged the visitors greatly. Sections Library has helped us a lot; Just like many partnerships, City of Chalon-sur-Saône and Grand Chalon catering services have been a force of offering and very accessible. We also thank the communication department who did an excellent job, graphic designer David Barbie on the poster and his presence as a cartoonist at the fair, and the publishers who trust us and who come back every year with their work and updates. All this is what makes the Youth Book Fair a success.

Éditions Éveil et Découvertes continues their fair adventures July 5-8 in Boulazac (Dordogne) near Bériggoux for a professional fair – the AGEEM Congress – dedicated to educators and will gather nearly 18,000 visitors from all over France. and DOM TOM.
