Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Here’s a classic recipe for Scalloped Potatoes:

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (such as cheddar, Gruyere, or a combination)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the mixture is golden brown and fragrant.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the mixture has thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. Stir in the salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Remove the saucepan from the heat and set aside.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the sliced onions and half of the shredded cheese. Pour half of the sauce over the cheese, spreading it evenly.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, onions, cheese, and sauce.
  7. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  8. After 45 minutes, remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  9. Remove the scalloped potatoes from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired, and serve hot as a delicious side dish.
